Level of measurement is a classification that relates the values that are assigned to variables with each other. In other words, level of measurement is used to describe information within the values. Psychologist Stanley Smith is known for developing four levels of measurement: nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. This framework of distinguishing levels of measurement originated in psychology and is widely criticized by scholars in other disciplines.
There are 4 levels of measurement , which can be ranked from low to high:
1. Nominal: the data can only be categorized
2. Ordinal: the data can be categorized and ranked.
3. Interval : the data can be categorized and ranked, and evenly spaced.
4. Ratio: the data can be categorized, ranked, evenly spaced and has a natural zero.
For Example, jersey numbers in basketball are measures at the nominal level. In Interval measurement the distance between attributes does have meaning. For example, when we measure temperature (in Fahrenheit), the distance from 30-40 is same as distance from 70-80. The interval between values is interpretable.
