There are many measurements, like temperature, mass, speed, time, distance, etc. Each of these has certain units associated with it. Measurements always involve as comparison. When we say that a person is six feet tall, we’re really saying that the person is six times taller than a reference object that is 1 foot in length, where foot is an example of a unit of measurement. Both the number and the unit are essential parts of the measurement.
Without any unit, the measurements alone are not significant; in other words, they are senseless. Therefore, units are written with the measurements.A unit of measurement is defined as the quantity fixed as a convention by law. It is adopted as the standard way of expressing a physical quantity. If units are not written in front of the measurements, the data would be just a number.
For example:
Water gets evaporated, the temperature is recorded as 100. Also, the length of the bucket is 100. If these are written as 100C˙ and 100 m, it is understood that the former denotes the temperature and the latter denotes the length. The number alone is insignificant.
The units give a sense to the measurement as every physical quantity is measured in units.
