We know that Degree of freedom =No. of class -No. of condition.
Since there will be only one condition for Chi-square goodness of fit test which is saying that the sum of observation is the class must be equal to total no. of observation. So, if there is a K category in the dataset and we want to apply Chi-square goodness of fit test. Then, their degree of freedom will be of k-1.
Thus, if a sample of n = 100 people is classified into four categories and the results are evaluated with a chi-square test for goodness of fit, then
The required df value for the chi-square statistic =4-1=3
