Step 1
Given compounds,
(a) tetraaquadibromomanganese(III) perchlorate
(b) bis(bipyridyl)cadmium(II) chloride
Nomenclature of coordination compounds,
- While naming a complex, the ligands are named first, followed by metal ion
- The order of naming of ligands are neutral, negative and positive.
- When the ligands are repeated multiple times, prefix is added as mono dentate, bidentate and tri dentate etc for 1, 2 and 3 respectively.
Step 2
(a) tetraaquadibromomanganese(III) perchlorate
The perchlorate ligand is given out of the coordination sphere.
Four aqua ligands and two bromo ligands are present inside the complex in which aqua ligand is followed by bromo ligand
Therefore the formula is: [Mn(H2O)4Br2]ClO4
(b) bis(bipyridyl)cadmium(II) chloride
Bipyridine is a bidentate ligand and it is two in number.
Chloride ion is present outside the complex.
The metal ion is Cadmium
The formula is:
[Cd(bipy)2]Cl2

The formula of the complex compound is written in a different way than its name. In writing chemical formulas of complex salt it is necessary to indicate the cation first (complex cadmium cation), and then the anion (chloride).
The metal center in the complex cation must be written first (Cadmium here), and then the ligand is written next, (bipyridine).
The coordination sphere must be enclosed in square brackets. Thus the formula of the complex vation is [Cd(bipy)2]
Since the overall charge of the complex cation is 2+(20=2), we need to have two chloride anions here.
Thus the molecular formula of the coordination compound is [Cd(bipy)2]Cl2

a. pentaaquaiodomanganese (III) perchlorate This indicates, 5 aqua (water) ligands with 1 iodo ligand. Mn is the central metal atom with +3 oxidation state. Perchlorate is anion after complex cation: [Mn(H2O)5I]2+ClO4 3+01=+2 [Mn(H2O)5I](ClO4)2 b. tris(ethylenediamine)cobalt (III) This indicates, 3 en: ethylenediamine ligands. Co is the central metal atom with +3 oxidation state. [Co(en)3]3+
