If I know that the solution I use to clean my car windows is 65% water and 35% cleaner, I have one relationship. Then the first equation is
x+y=t
where t is total number of liters
Also given that t=3.
These are 2 equations that need to be solved simultaneously.
Replace t in the first equation with t=3 from the second equation
x+y=3
It is given that x=0.65t and y=0.35t.
Replace t with 3 and the equations becomes
x=0.65×3and y=0.35×3
solve for x and y to get x=1.95 and y=1.05
The amount of water in the 3 liter spray bottle is 1.95 liters.
