A square matrix A is said to be singular if its determinant value is 0.
i.e |A|=0
Here, the given matrix is M=[40344114+k81]
So we must have
|M|=0
[40344114+k81]=0
Now, expanding the determinant by its 1st row
4(4+8)03(32+4(14+k))=0
483(3296+4k)=0
483(64+4k)=0
48+19212k=0
14412k=0
12k=144
k=12
So ,the required value of k=12 for which the matric is singular.
