Consider the experiment : Rolling of fair die once.
The possible outcomes or the sample space for the experiment is: {1,2,3,4,5,6}
Let the given event is that an even number is rolled and we want to find out the probability that it is a 2.
To find the probability we need to always consider the given event,
Let P(2Even) denote the event.
By simple probability law, we can say that there are only 3 even numbers in sample space, that is,
{2, 4, 6}. The probability of obtaining 2 when it is given that even number is rolled is equal to 13.
But the probability of obtaining 2 without any prior information is equal to 16.
Step 2
By conditional probability definition,
P(AB)=P(AB)P(B) for P(B)>0
A= even number was rolled
B=2 was outcome
P(2Even)=P(2Even)P(Even)
=13×3636
=13
