a) Calculation:
Since Nina needs 12 cup of walnuts for each pan, so in order to find the number of cups of walnuts in baking five pans of fudge, it will be five times the number of cups of walnuts needed for each.
That is, the number of cups of walnuts she need for five pans of fudge is
512=52
Therefore, she needs 52 cup of walnuts for five pans of fudge.
b) It would be easier to use a mixed number to represent the number of cups of walnuts used in baking fudge. Because using the mixed number, we will know how many full cups of walnuts we need and how many half cups needed.
In this case here if the number of pans is even, then the number of cups of walnuts need would be a whole number. And if the number of pans is odd, then there would some whole cups and one half of walnuts.
Here in the above case we can see that the number of cups of walnuts needed for 5 pans of fudge was 52 which on converting in mixed numbers gives 212. Since 5 is an odd number, so there would be 2 full cups of walnuts and one half cup of walnuts needed for baking five pans.
