Let x be the number of hours worked in the fast-food restaurant and y be the number of hours tutoring.
Vince worked 18 hours last week so:
x+y=18(1)
He earned $161.50:
7.25x+15y=161.50(2)
Solve by substitution. Solve for y using (1) to obtain (3):
y=18x(3)
Substitute (3) to (2) and solve for x:
7.25x+15(18x)=161.50
7.25x+27015x=161.50
7.75x+270=161.50
7.75x=108.50
x=14
Solve for yy using (3):
y=1814
y=4
So, Vince worked in the fast-food restaurant for 14 hours and tutoring for 4 hours.
