Let x be the number of operators and y be the number of laborers.
Thirty-five people were hired so:
x+y=35(1)
The payroll was $3950 so:
140x+90y=3950(2)
Solve for yy using (1) to obtain (3):
y=35x(3)
Substitute (3) to (2) and solve for x:
140x+90(35x)=3950
140x+315090x=3950
50x+3150=3950
50x=800
x=16
Solve for y using (3):
y=3516
y=19
So, there were 16 operators and 19 laborers.
