A proposed study design is to leave 100 questionnaires by the checkout line in a student cafeteria. The questionnaire can be picked up by any student and returned to the cashier. Explain why this volunteer sample is a poor study design.

Notice that students are not randomly selected to participate in the survey. Only those who visit the cafeteria could fill out the questionnaire, and they are not obligated to do that if they don’t want to.
So, this sample fits perfectly into the definition of self-selected sample.
Therefore, this sample is not representative ofthe population of all students Notice that only those with strong opinions are likely to respond to questions in the questionnaire, whereas others probably won't respond.
So, the sample consists (mostly) of answers that show strong favoritism or opposition to the questions asked, so in fact, it tells us noting about the poptlation of all students, but rather only about those who filled out the questionnaire.
Th male the sample representative, it should include other types of answers as well, which isn't very likely to happen in this kind of survey.
