The row echelon form of a system of linear equations is given.

(a)Write the system of equations corresponding to the given matrix. Use x, y; or x, y, z; or x1,x2,x3,x4 as variables.

(b)Determine whether the system is consistent or inconsistent. If it is consistent, give the solution.

(a) The system of equations corresponding to the given matrix is
x-3y=-4
y=0.
(b) Putting y = 0 in the first equation we get x — 3.0 = -4 i.e. x= —4. So, the given system of equation is consistent and x = —4, y = 0 is the solution of the given system of equations.
