The pattern in each group (purple/green) is then increasing and thus there is a positive correlation in each group.
But if you look at the two groups together, then the scatterplot slopes downwards and thus the correlation will be negative.

Positive correlation when you observe the groups separately. Negative correlation when observing all data values together.
