A 15-g bullet strikes and becomes embedded in a 1.10-kg block of wood placed on a horizontal surface just in front of the gun. If the coefficient of friction between the block and the surface is 0.25,and the impact drives the block a distance of 9.5 m before it comes to rest, what was the muzzle speed of the bullet. The muzzle speed sounds like it's the bullet's stopping velocity. I got 5.0104 for that, but the magnitude seems a little high.

There is a small round-off error in Anonymous.. The correct answer is 507.158 m/s, but to three significant figures, both responses agree.
mU+0=(M+m)V
V=mM+mU
Work-energy theorem:
W=KE
frS=M+m2v2
μ(M+m)gS=M+m2(0V2)
2μgS=V2=(mM+mU)2
U=M+mm2μgs
